The cost

The biggest expense is the skateboard itself. You can get a decent board for around $100. But if you want a top-of-the-line board, you’re looking at closer to $1000. Then you have to add in the cost of safety gear. A good helmet will run you about $50, and pads for your elbows and knees will add another $30 or so to the total.

And don’t forget about insurance! If you plan on skateboarding regularly, it’s a good idea to get some liability coverage just in case you injure yourself or someone else. All told, you can expect to spend around $200 on gear and insurance.

Of course, that’s just the upfront cost. You also have to factor in the ongoing costs of skateboarding, like replacing broken parts and buying new skateboards every few years. But even with those costs included, skateboarding is still cheaper than driving – and a lot more fun.
